Dear Parents,
We had a busy week together! Following are the activities that each grade level completed this week.
First Grade We started our Animal Kingdom unit by studying the characteristics of living things. This week we learned that cells are the building block for all life. There are many different kinds of cells and cells have different functions. We specifically studied the parts of animal and plant cells. The students are in the process of making plant and animal shrinky dink cells.
Second Grade We began our game unit by learning two strategy games: a review of "Tic Tac Toe" to learn "Ultimate Tic Tac Toe" and "Nine Men's Morris". We will be learning a variety of games over the next few weeks that practice logical reasoning. The children are learning to strategize and plan their moves based on their opponents moves. They need to think from their perspective as well as their opponents perspective.
Third Grade Students used predetermined links and videos to access information about the heart. They used note-sketching to document their learning. On Wednesday they began making a clay model of the heart. We will finish these on Tuesday.
Fourth Grade We reviewed the meaning of each cultural universal to make sure that they had a full understanding of each. We talked about the strong influence of geography (location, topography, climate, soil, etc.) on a culture. The students chose to divide into groups by gender. Each group is creating their own past, present or future culture. The discussions have been lively and creative.
Fifth Grade The theme for the Eanes Film Festival is Social Emotional Learning. In addition to the theme the film also needs to include a red sweater, the phrase "welcome to the neighborhood" and slow motion. We started the unit by watching and reading mentor short films and books on SEL topics. The students brainstormed story ideas, used story maps to plan the elements and some groups started writing scripts.
